Mookerheide

Vast heathlands, beautiful forests, and a rich history characterize the Mookerheide nature reserve. There was heavy fighting here during World War II, but it was also a veritable battlefield during the Eighty Years’ War. There are two redoubts here—defensive structures from which the enemy could be spotted approaching from afar. Today, this area is especially popular for enjoying the peace and open spaces on foot or by bike. Keep your ears open, as various species of woodpeckers can be heard here. In the evening, you can hear the nightjar.
